Few releases attract a collector’s attention quite like a new Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph. These watches sit at the heart of the manufacture’s history, and new references tend to arrive years, sometimes decades, apart.

Presented at the Milan Grand Exhibition, the new reference 5978P-010 joins that lineage with an instantaneous perpetual calendar, a redesigned dial and a noticeably less formal appearance. The launch edition is housed in platinum and limited to 120 pieces.

There is plenty here that feels familiar. But put it beside a 5970 or 5270, and the differences become clear.

## A Family Dating Back to 1941

Patek Philippe’s manually wound perpetual calendar chronograph story began with the reference 1518 in 1941. It was followed by the 2499 in 1951, the 3970 in 1986, the cushion-shaped 5020 in 1994, the 5970 in 2004 and the 5270 in 2011.

That makes the 5978P only the seventh reference in this particular family.

Each generation has brought changes in proportions, movements and design. The 5270 introduced Patek’s own chronograph calibre to the series, succeeding references powered by movements based on externally supplied designs. The 5978P retains that in-house chronograph foundation, but changes the way the perpetual calendar is displayed and operates.

It also arrives alongside the 5270. For now, collectors have two distinctly different interpretations of the complication to consider.

## The Calendar Takes Centre Stage

The most obvious departure is at the top of the dial. Three apertures follow a gentle curve, displaying the day, date and month. They give the calendar a prominent position and separate it visually from the chronograph counters below.

The mechanism behind those windows is the more significant development. The calendar indications change instantaneously, completing their transition in approximately 30 milliseconds.

To achieve this, Patek Philippe adapted the instantaneous perpetual calendar mechanism used in its 5208 and 5308 Grand Complications and combined it with the CH 29-535 chronograph architecture.

For this Milan edition, the calendar displays are in Italian. It is a small detail, but one that gives the limited series a clear connection to its place of introduction.

## Inside the New Calibre

The resulting movement is the manually wound CH 29-535 PS QI. It contains 500 components, compared with 456 in the CH 29-535 PS Q used by the 5270.

Alongside the perpetual calendar, it provides a column-wheel chronograph, small seconds, a moon-phase display, a leap-year indication and a day/night indicator. It runs at 4 Hz and delivers a power reserve of 55 to 65 hours with the chronograph disengaged.

One detail deserves a little explanation: the movement combines an instantaneous perpetual calendar with an instantaneous chronograph minute counter.

The latter means that the chronograph’s minute hand jumps to the next minute as a full minute elapses. Having both mechanisms in one watch is a first for Patek Philippe, although it is not an industry first.

For anyone who enjoys the engineering behind complicated watches, that combination is a meaningful part of the release. For the wearer, the benefit is more straightforward: calendar changes and elapsed minutes are displayed with a clean, decisive jump.

## Platinum, Blue and a More Casual Design

The 5978P’s appearance is another departure from the established family.

Its platinum case features a concave bezel and hollowed, curved lugs, drawing on a case style seen in references such as the 5205 and 5208. A small diamond is set into the case at six o’clock.

The dial is navy blue with a sunburst finish and a black gradient around the edge. Different levels and textures give it depth, while applied white-gold markers and luminous dauphine hands keep the time display clear. Red accents introduce a little more colour than collectors might expect from a traditional Patek perpetual calendar chronograph.

A navy composite strap continues that approach. It has a textile pattern, red stitching and an Italian-flag detail, and closes with a platinum folding clasp.

Taken together, these choices give the 5978P a more relaxed character. It is still a substantial platinum complication, but one that looks comfortable outside a formal setting.

## The Question of Size

The dimensions will divide opinion. At 42mm in diameter and 14.45mm thick, the 5978P is larger than the 41mm 5270.

That matters in a family where collectors often have strong preferences about case proportions. Anyone drawn to the smaller dimensions of earlier references may find this new model a little imposing.

The calendar mechanism helps explain the size, but dimensions alone cannot tell us how well the watch wears. The shape of the lugs, the weight of the platinum case and the flexibility of the strap will all play a part. An assessment on the wrist will be more useful than a verdict based on the specification sheet.

## Price and Availability

The Patek Philippe reference 5978P-010 is limited to 120 pieces for the Milan Grand Exhibition. Hodinkee lists the price at €320,757.

A wider production version has not been confirmed. For collectors, that leaves an interesting question: how much of what we see here will shape future references?

The new calibre gives Patek Philippe a foundation to develop, while the calendar layout offers a visibly different identity within an established collection. Other metals, dial colours or case dimensions could each change the character considerably, although none has been announced.

For now, the 5978P is a rare exhibition edition with significance beyond its production numbers. Patek has introduced a substantial mechanical change to one of its defining complications—and given it a design that makes that change immediately visible.
